WHEELER NORTH REEF CONSTRUCTION 2008

Southern California Edison, CoastalEnvironments, and Connolly-Pacific Co. colaborated in 1999 to build an artificial kelp reef off San Clemente, California. This project was undertaken to mitigate kelp and associated biota losses from operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. The Experimental Kelp Reef was needed to study the varying densities of hard substrate coverage and reef materials. Data was gathered from construction and monitoring. This information will be utilized to build the remaining 127-acres of the mitigation kelp reef. Construction is expected to start June 9, 2008. Click on Description link below for complete details.
