San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 Dismantlement Marine Impacts Study, San Onofre, CA Southern California Edison (SCE) is in the beginning stages of decommissioning and dismantling the Unit 1 reactor at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) located in San Onofre, California. SONGS Unit 1 was an electrical generation facility that operated commercially from 1968 through 1992. Coastal Environments (CE) is providing the information necessary to predict the impacts of waves and wave run-up at the site after dismantlement of the reactor and associated onshore and offshore structures. The long-term effects of waves on the beach after decommissioning must be addressed prior to dismantlement to clarify viability and consequences of leaving subsurface and offshore portions of the cooling system and onshore foundations on site. The study also provided basic information about the long-term oceanographic conditions at the site, including coastal setting, littoral cell processes, existing beach conditions, longshore transport of sand, rates of sand supply from local cliffs and rivers, wave climate, tides, sea level, rainfall, and drainage. This information was used to form the basis of preliminary projection of future beach behavior and an assessment of the probability of flooding the site with and without the current sea wall. |
