Annual Monitoring of Sedimentation Los Penasquitos Lagoon, San Diego County, California

Coastal Environments has been monitoring sediment deposits in Los Penasquitos Lagoon, located in San Diego, California, for Los Penasquitos Lagoon Foundation (LPLF). LPLF has the general objectives of preserving and enhancing the wetland habitat in the lagoon. These objectives require that the entrance channel to the lagoon remain open to tidal flushing to enhance water quality.

The studies contain results of field monitoring and describe changes in deposition of sediments in Los Penasquitos Lagoon. The principal sources of sediment input to the lagoon are from the ocean and flood runoff. Sedimentation affects the open or closed status of inlet of the lagoon and, therefore, the dynamics of sedimentation are important to monitor as they relate to the overall health of the lagoon.

The monitoring project included a) surveys of lagoon channels b) monitoring of marsh sedimentation with lagoon marsh habitat using pipes c) photography of storm water runoff and lagoon channels.
